Fevers are our Friends

Fevers are Nature's Soldiers Against Illness

Fevers are the natural response of a body to heal itself when attacked. They will stimulate the immune system and the elevated temperature will kill the invaders (microbes)!

So when your system is attacked, if you take aspirin, you are sending your soldiers back to the fort and letting the enemy last longer than it should.

How smart is that? Well, obviously it's not, but that's what we've been programmed to do. I'm sure Bayer is pleased with the situation.

Facts on Temperatures

The optimum temperature for a body to fight against microbes is 102-103 degrees Fahrenheit. For adults, I view a temperature as a friend as long as it doesn’t get above 104.5 Fahrenheit. Medical attention is needed when temperatures get above this level.

When you start to feel flush, you should support yourself by fasting or consuming broths and drinking fluids. Getting as much rest as possible is also a good idea. You may look tired and and feel sluggish, but your body is working hard to heal itself.

Children and Temperatures

The following information was taken from Dr. Mercola's website:

"When Medical Attention is Warranted"

Infants less than 1-month-old, with a temperature greater than 100.4 degrees F. seek care right away.

While waiting for care, breastfeed as often as the baby desires. The mother's milk has antibodies made right at the breast as it encounters pathogens in the baby's mouth.

Infants from 1-month to 3-months-old, with a temperature greater than 100.4 degrees F, if they appear ill. Again, breastfeed on demand while waiting for care.

Children between 3 months and 36 months, with a temperature above 102.2 degrees F, if they appear ill.

For children not in the above three categories, bed rest and fluids will support the temperature and allow it to do the job that your child needs it to do."

Hippocrates said, “Give me a fever and I can cure any illness." That's good enough for me.

Adopt his philosophy and view an elevated temperature as a friend. It is playing for your team, so let it.

Be aware, think for yourself, and take control of your own health!
